Mario's Health Tips: Sleep Better With Better Nutrition
Why do children sleep better than adults?
Its pretty simple to explain actually with a quick lesson in micro-biology, cell biology and how our amazing brain works: as adults, we typically mess with the natural balance of neurotransmitters in our system. That includes the delicate balance of receptors, signals, neuro-chemicals and neurotransmitters in the cells of our brain AND body. This affects us physically and emotionally. Getting a good night's sleep sounds wonderful doesn't it. It is a subject Al and I are going to discuss in detail and answer your questions soon on a future airing of our weekly radio show Grassroots Talks Health (every Monday night 9pm EST)
On the milder and reasonable side of throwing our system out of balance, we start the day with a nice, fresh latte and might end the day with a glass of red wine with dinner to wind the day down. That daily routine could even be called "healthy" because ONE fresh coffee is loaded with good nutrients, a reasonable amount of caffeine to stimulate you, and the red wine gives you a nice dose of excellent dark grape-related nutrients.
But problems can arise if you tend to have a moody or addictive personality because your body will adjust and start to crave "more". Hence, you become a wired, anxious coffee-addicted pain in the ass or worse, you develop a problem with alcohol.
Nutrition and health expert David Wolfe just posted a very good article on sleeping better at the Huffington Post
Here's the key messages from the article outlining a two step plan to sleep like a baby:
"Answers coming out of innovative areas of neurology and bio-psychology indicate that due to stress, lack of exercise, poor nutrition, and in particular the use of stimulants (coffee, tobacco, alcohol, prescription drugs, recreational drugs) adults are experiencing neurotransmitter imbalances and disturbed neurotransmitter receptor sites that are translating into poor sleep. On the other hand, children -- especially well-fed, well-loved children and breast-fed infants -- have a healthier balance of neurotransmitters and pure neurotransmitter receptor sites and thus sleep better."
The indication is that neurotransmitters play a crucial role in sleeping and how well we sleep.

The Twenty Question Freight Train with Dr. Al and Mario at Blog Talk Radio: Monday Nights 8pm EST
Starting to radio co-host the Los Angeles-based radio show with my old friend Dr. Allen Brown a few weeks ago has turned into quite the exciting adventure. Radio and TV show formats often work best with co-hosts and Dr. Al recently got lucky as he was preparing our show's format when he came up with the idea to fire away at me impromptu with a list of 25 questions. This week's questions focused on marketing and starting your own website.
Dr. Al and I have stayed in touch for 10 years since I relocated overseas to China. It seems 7000 miles of Pacific Ocean still hasn't stopped him from figuring out how to unlock the insights and knowledge floating around in my head and this new format with us co-hosting goes like a freight train for listeners looking for hard, fast, direct answers live on the air.
Right away I had memories of my Toastmasters sessions 30 years ago in Scottsdale, Arizona where I first started learning how to respond to impromptu questions intelligently and creatively. Now we have this exciting format moving forward as we co-host the radio shows "Grass Roots Talks Money" and "Grass Roots Talks Health" each week in this time slot, with expanded time slots coming soon.

This Week Mario Speaking at Health Shanghai 2009 Conference Followed by Piano Concert Performances in Guangzhou and Ningbo
Well I have to admit that at age 49 maintaining better health has become more of a priority. This week on Wednesday November 11th puts me in Shanghai at Health Shanghai 2009. I 'll be giving a 30 minute keynote address on the importance of creating a corporate vision and culture which includes a culture of health. Not to mention from an HR point of view that good health reduces a company's massive health care costs, healthy employees are happier and more engaged on a daily basis. This event has been organized and coordinated by a number of partners including Shanghai Airlines and the World Anti-Aging Academy of Medicine China, a member-based society since 1995 dedicated to the protection and preservation of the health of the public, and the advancement of education and research in the clinical specialties of anti-aging and regenerative medicine...
...meanwhile, shifting interests to the musical and artistic side of life, I will not be performing at the Mandarin Oriental Sanya this weekend as I will be on a mid-November jazz piano concert tour in Zhoushan on Nov 13th, Guangzhou on Saturday, Nov 14th and Ningbo on Sunday, Nov 15th. Many thanks to China Art Events Co. Hangzhou for organizing this mid-November tour. Cheers, Mario
Beliefs, Values, Being: The Ultimate Life Goal Is A Pervasive Feeling of Well Being For No Apparent Reason
A Pervasive Feeling of Well Being For No Apparent Reason
Read it carefully. Do more than read it. Absorb it. Let it sink in. Because as you do you will suddenly realize that the above statement makes you realize that whatever you are chasing doesn't add up.
A few month's earlier a close friend and business associate in marketing was commenting to me on the negative, pervasive nature of the advertising industry. We were discussing the fact that an average human being living in a suburban area is hit with somewhere over 6000 ad messages of one sort or another per day.
All of those ad messages are basically trying to tell you one nasty lie: You're not happy. They push your emotional buttons to make you feel a certain way; wanting, unsatisfied. You need our product/service and then you'll be happy, then you'll feel good for this and that reason. And you know what? You actually start to believe it and become it. Media/advertising is an enormous part of the pervasive social structure around you which...
